Wylfa confirmed as Rolls-Royce SMRs first UK site
Great British Energy - Nuclear (GBE-N) has confirmed that Wylfa, on the coast of Ynys Môn (Anglesey) in North Wales, will host three Rolls-Royce Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
Wylfa is an ideal site with a long and proud history of nuclear power generation. Ynys Môn hosts a skilled workforce and an engaged community. Developing a deep and collaborative relationship with the surrounding communities will be the first priority for Rolls-Royce SMR and Great British Energy - Nuclear as we work to deploy the technology in a way that leaves an enduring and positive legacy.
Chris Cholerton, Rolls-Royce SMR Chief Executive, said: “We are honoured to have the opportunity to establish our UK fleet programme with an initial three units at the Wylfa site. Today’s announcement marks the first step in what will be a 100-year commitment to clean energy, innovation, and community partnership at Wylfa.
This is a tremendous opportunity not just for North Wales but for the whole country, as we establish an enduring supply chain that will enable our fleet deployment in the UK and a large export programme, starting in Czechia.”
“We will deliver nuclear power very differently by utilising modularisation and a high level of factory build, therefore minimising the impact on local people from infrastructure delivery. We are excited to be working with the local community to create jobs and growth.”
Rolls-Royce SMR was selected as the preferred bidder to build the UK’s next generation of nuclear power stations by GBE-N in June this year. Our programme at Wylfa will support an average of almost 8,000 highly skilled, well-paid jobs across the UK per year during the build programme.
Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, said: “This landmark investment proves Britain can still build big projects that stand the test of time.
“A generation of young people across North Wales will benefit from the good jobs, homes across Britain will get clean power and we will take a big step forward in meeting our ambition to create a network of small modular reactors across the UK.
“This is the Government’s clean energy mission in action - driving for energy sovereignty and abundance to take back control of our energy.”
Rolls-Royce SMR utilises a truly differentiated approach to deploying proven nuclear technology, with each factory-built nuclear power plant generating enough stable low-carbon electricity to power a million homes for 60+ years.

Notes to Editors:
The Rolls-Royce SMR is the UK’s first domestic nuclear technology in more than 20 years - providing a British solution to a global energy dilemma. Each small modular reactor will produce enough stable, affordable, emission-free energy to power a million homes for at least 60 years.
Rolls-Royce SMR welcomes comments and questions about the Rolls-Royce SMR design. This feedback will be incorporated into the GDA process and may be published anonymously on the Rolls-Royce SMR GDA website and used during dialogue with the regulators.
