The value of apprenticeships

Our apprenticeships are a structured learning and industry experience programme involving meaningful, valuable work while studying for a relevant, recognised qualification. As well as leading to a nationally recognised qualification, many of our apprenticeships also offer professional accreditation and opportunities for further qualifications.

Level 3 – Advanced (A-Level)
Levels 4 and 5 – Higher (Foundation Degree)
Levels 6 and 7 – Degree (Bachelor or Master Degree)

Meet some of our apprentices

Muhammed Daud, Nuclear Engineering Degree Apprentice

As a Nuclear Engineering Degree Apprentice, I’ve had the opportunity to try out different areas within engineering such as human factors, component design, test and facilities capability as well as engineering software capability.

I'm also an active member of our inclusion networks—BETA (early careers), which has taken me to several conferences and site visits to power plants, and REACH (Racial, Ethnic and Cultural Heritage), where I’ve shared my personal experiences and helped coordinate meaningful events. Alongside these activities, I’ve developed technical skills in areas such as virtual reality and 3D printing, earned a coaching certificate, and even had the privilege of representing the company in Parliament. All of these experiences have not only strengthened my technical capabilities but also helped me grow personally, boosting my confidence, improving my communication, and shaping me into a more well-rounded individual and a more capable employee.

Panxin West, Nuclear Engineering Degree Apprentice

As a Nuclear Engineering Degree Apprentice, I’ve had the opportunity to try out different areas within engineering such as digital and data, components and mechanical equipment design, stress analysis and radiation protection.

I have also been able to get involved and lead on projects such as creating and designing an apprentice app with automated workflows, which made it simpler for apprentices to view and input their current information such as placement details and annual leave requests.

Joshua Housley, Project Management Apprentice, Engineering Capability Team

As a Project Management Apprentice, outside of my general tasks, I was given the opportunity to manage the relationship between Rolls-Royce SMR and Primary Engineer, a company designing programmes for students aged 3-19 to encourage uptake in STEM subjects. This was a privilege as I'm very passionate about increasing STEM within schools and to have the responsibility of representing Rolls-Royce SMR to not only Primary Engineer staff but employees from the various other businesses they work with was an honour.

David Bennett, Digital Learning Lead

I had no prior experience in creating digital learning before joining Rolls-Royce SMR. I was a manager in the healthcare industry for 5 years prior to joining, but I had delivered face-to-face training for new colleagues joining the business.

The organisation supported my development by enrolling me onto a Level 5 apprenticeship as a Digital Learning Designer. This apprenticeship has supported me through the last 18 months and has transformed my abilities. I believe that I’ve learned and accomplished more in the last 18 months than I did through three years of my degree at university. This opportunity has reignited a lost spark of creativity that I once had and has greatly improved all my skillsets.

You’re never too old to learn something new and try something different. So give it a go!
