Steam turbine components for Rolls-Royce SMR to be manufactured in the UK


Key steam turbine components for Rolls-Royce SMR’s first three small modular reactors at the Gwyndod project, on Anglesey in North Wales, will be manufactured at Siemens Energy’s Newcastle site – including high-pressure turbines and valve casings. This marks the first time such components will be produced for a small modular reactor anywhere in Europe.

The Newcastle facility is also planned to become the service hub for Siemens Energy’s key components for the Rolls-Royce SMR UK fleet. The historic CA Parsons Works site builds on the legacy of Sir Charles Parsons’ turbine works and has been a critical part of the UK’s energy infrastructure since 1889 – including building the steam turbine for Calder Hall in West Cumbria, the World’s first commercial nuclear power station which began generating in 1956.

Miatta Fahnbulleh, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, said: "This is what our golden age of nuclear looks like in practice: skilled jobs in Newcastle, stronger British manufacturing and a more secure energy future.

"Producing these components here in the UK will help strengthen our energy security, reduce our exposure to volatile international gas markets, create new export opportunities for British industry, and reindustrialise the UK."

Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds, said: "When the Prime Minister promised growth in every postcode, this is what he meant. This investment will support more than 550 good jobs for people in Newcastle and delivers on our pledge to reindustrialise Britain. Building small modular reactors here in the UK presents huge benefits for us, from more export opportunities to more jobs on the ground at home.

"Through our Modern Industrial Strategy, we are creating the conditions for businesses to invest in high-skilled jobs, strengthen supply chains and back the industries that can put more money in people’s pockets."

Rolls-Royce SMR selected Siemens Energy, a world leader in steam turbine technology, as its global turbine systems partner in February 2025, recognising the partnership’s potential to unlock UK jobs and significant manufacturing opportunities. The former Parsons site will, therefore, produce vital components for the Gwyndod project in the UK and for the growing SMR export market. Today’s announcement will support more than 550 jobs and create new opportunities in Newcastle.
