Rolls-Royce SMR has welcomed the report by NESO

Rolls-Royce SMR has welcomed the report by NESO (National Energy Systems Operator) giving advice on achieving clean power for Great Britain by 2030, which outlines the potential contribution from small modular reactors (SMRs).

The report describes how ‘Nuclear power will play an important role in achieving a clean power system by 2030 and beyond into the 2030s’. On SMRs specifically, NESO states ‘Government could consider the value of bringing this [SMR] rollout forward’. As the only SMR company in the final step of the UK’s regulatory approvals, Rolls-Royce SMR is well placed to deliver on this opportunity to move at pace and deliver the next generation of nuclear for the UK.

The report also identifies the importance of reforms to planning processes and by streamlining processes – while maintaining community consent – critical national infrastructure can be deployed quickly and efficiently and at a lower cost to the consumer.
