Major milestone reached for Czechia's first Rolls-Royce SMR

The project to build the Czech Republic’s first Rolls-Royce SMR at Temelín has taken another step forward with the start of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

The EIA will examine the proposed power plant's impact on the local environment and identify measures to minimise those impacts.

The milestone marks significant progress in Rolls-Royce SMR's partnership with ČEZ to deliver Czechia's first Small Modular Reactor, supporting the country's clean energy and energy security ambitions.

The Czech Ministry of the Environment will examine the submission, including an independent review and a public consultation, with the outcome expected in 2027.

The start of the EIA process follows the signing of Early Works Contracts between Rolls-Royce SMR and the Czech state utility, ČEZ, supporting the preparation of the site and working to secure the permits required for construction at Temelín.

It also builds on a Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this year between Rolls-Royce SMR, ČEZ and the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade. This enabled site preparation activities at Tušimice and Dětmarovice, supporting plans to deploy up to 3GW of Rolls-Royce SMR capacity in Czechia.

Together, these milestones move Czechia a step closer to deploying its first Rolls-Royce SMR at Temelín.
