We are now recruiting for the exciting role of Senior Materials Engineer, to be involved in industry leading, cutting-edge design project for a new type of power station.  

The successful materials engineer (Senior Materials Engineer - Degradation) will sit within the materials and chemistry team and principally be responsible for the delivery of technical justifications on materials degradation mechanisms supporting the RR SMR Ageing Management Plan. The role requires a close working relationship with other teams within the engineering directorate as part of Integrated Project Teams. The materials and chemistry team supports the full-lifecycle of the power plant from conceptual design through to decommissioning, including providing support to manufacturing and development engineering, and the supply chain. Therefore, the role will include responsibilities within the wide and varied tasks the team need to achieve. Due to the wide scope and range of activities undertaken by the materials team, the specific accountabilities of the role can be catered towards the successful candidate based on experience or interest.

  • Development and delivery technical justifications on materials degradation mechanisms within the environment of the RR SMR.

  • Support Integrated Project Teams (IPTs) – component design and development engineering

  • Integrate and own the plan to ensure delivery to cost, quality and schedule

  • Stakeholder engagement both internally to RR SMR and external as necessary

  • Being embedded in the materials and chemistry team to drive delivery of wide and varied design support tasks

Key Selection Criteria
Criteria 1 – Principles of Materials -  The ability to understand the fundamental principles of materials systems.
Criteria 2 – Environmental Degradation - The ability to understand the impact of environmental factors on the degradation of materials within a PWR environment for metallic and/or non-metallic materials and have an understanding of technologies or other solutions to avoid or minimise such degradation
Criteria 3 – Experience in the Nuclear Industry – We are seeking candidates preferably with a background in the nuclear industry or a highly regulated industry, ideally with experience in:
        Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) plant design and behaviour.
        Environmental, Safety, Security and Safeguarding (E3S) regulations and principles (including application of As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) and Best Available Technique (BAT) principals).
Criteria 4 – Presenting Information to Stakeholders - The ability to take complex information, understand it and present it in an appropriate and compelling format, which includes formal communications to the appropriate stakeholders and audiences within and outside of your area of expertise.
Criteria 5 – Collaboration Skills - A proactive, positive attitude, with the desire and ability to learn fast, challenge conventional thinking and make a difference.

Pay and Benefits
We anticipate a paying salary of between £51,000 & £60,000 negotiable dependant on experience, a performance related bonus of up to 12.5%, an attractive pension scheme with 12% employer and 6% employee contributions. You will also receive a flexible benefits allowance of £2,200, enabling you to create a bespoke package to suit your needs.
