We are now recruiting for a Commissioning Strategy SME to be involved in delivering an industry leading, cutting-edge design project for a new type of nuclear power station.

What we’re looking for

As Commissioning Strategy SME you will provide the visionary thinking and deep technical expertise to steer Rolls-Royce SMR’s approach to power station commissioning, as part of our innovative approach to make new nuclear power more deliverable. They will achieve this by guiding the activities of the small Commissioning Strategy team within Development Engineering, by acting as a wider internal champion for commissioning, and by leading key external interactions, for example with wider industry, customers, and regulators.

Key selection criteria for this role are:

Commissioning Experience
The SME shall bring extensive knowledge and experience of the process of commissioning new plant in a safety-critical and highly-regulated industry (experience within the nuclear industry in particular would be desirable, but is not essential – we will also consider experience with other forms of power generation, as well as process industry, oil & gas etc)

Strategic mindset, and ability to plan for future success
The SME shall lead the team’s thinking in creating a strategic vision for the commissioning phase, and to derive from this the tangible plans of action that will ensure the vision can be achieved.

Proactive approach to challenging the status quo
Rolls-Royce SMR’s innovative approach to delivering a nuclear power station means thinking differently about every aspect of the delivery phase, including commissioning. The SME shall lead the way in challenging conventional thinking, including proactively searching for best-practice from across the globe and working to embed it within the business wherever it will deliver a safer, more efficient and effective outcome.

Communication & influencing skills
The SME shall be able to effectively communicate and influence both internally and externally to Rolls-Royce SMR. This includes the ability to express clearly the importance of early thinking about commissioning, and to build credibility and support to the the strategic approach that Rolls-Royce SMR is taking to it. It also includes the ability to build effective networks across global industry to provide Rolls-Royce SMR with access to global best-practice.

Coaching skills
The SME shall be able to effectively impart their knowledge and experience onto the growing Commissioning team within Rolls-Royce SMR, to develop the team’s overall capability.

• Degree-level or equivalent qualifications in Engineering, Physical Sciences, Mathematics or a related discipline.
• Professional recognition through an appropriate professional body, or be working towards it.

As we strive to find the best fit for this position, we are seeking individuals with a minimum level of experience, training, and qualification. But we’ll let you in on a secret: there’s no such thing as the ‘perfect’ candidate. If you feel you meet 75% of the requirements for this role, we would love to hear from you.

Pay and Benefits
We anticipate paying a salary between £70,000 to £75,000 plus package.

There is also a performance related bonus of up to 12.5%, and an attractive pension scheme with 12% employer and 6% employee contributions. You will also receive a flexible benefits allowance of £2,200, enabling you to create a bespoke package to suit your needs.

Each Rolls-Royce SMR power station will have the capacity to generate 470MW of low carbon energy, equivalent to more than 150 onshore wind turbines and enough to power a million homes. It will provide consistent baseload generation for at least 60 years, helping to support the roll out of renewable generation and overcome intermittency issues
