As part of the rapid growth of Rolls-Royce SMR Ltd, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented Plant Commissioning Strategy Team Leader to join their team in Derby or Warrington.

About the Position

Rolls-Royce SMR is a radically different approach to delivering new nuclear power, taking advantage of factory-built modularisation techniques to drastically reduce the amount of on-site construction required. This approach also allows plant commissioning to be tackled in a new way, and our goal is to achieve a significantly shorter commissioning programme than for a traditional site-built plant.

A small Commissioning team has been working to map out the high-level strategic enablers that can provide this acceleration. For example, our modularised design will allow some of the commissioning tasks which would traditionally be performed on-site to be brought forward to the factory or elsewhere.

Although hands-on commissioning is still several years away, we are now entering a key phase of the programme in which we need to develop and embed those enablers, as some will require us to influence the design of the plant, and/or the factories. This presents an exciting opportunity for a new team lead to join, and lead the way on this journey.

The team’s primary goals in this next phase are to:
1. Develop a detailed strategy and schedule for commissioning that supports the business’s overall fleet deployment schedule.
2. Drive the progress of the strategic enablers that are required to support that schedule, to ensure that they deliver their benefits when needed – eg. Design for commissioning.
The team will need to consider the First Of A Kind (FOAK) plant, but also consider how our fleet-based approach to deployment can enable significant time savings for N’th Of A Kind (NOAK) plants.

The Commissioning Strategy team reports into the broader ‘Development Engineering’ organisation, which also has accountability for proving the design in advance of the commissioning phase (eg. through activities like rig testing, analysis etc.)

Key Responsibilities

• Building and maintaining a capable Commissioning Team, through a combination of recruitment and sub-contract.
• Developing the team members to be at their best, through coaching, performance management etc.
• Providing day-to-day coordination of the team’s work, including prioritisation and tasking, to ensure it delivers against its commitments.
• Providing technical leadership, to set a high standard in the:
Development of a schedule of commissioning activities that is integrated with the wider plant installation & construction schedule, and meets our ambitious timescales.
Mapping out of the commissioning activities needed for each system/component, which will be performed together with the plant design & verification teams.
Influencing of wider engineering & operations teams, to ensure key enablers for commissioning are put in place (eg. Plant design, factory design, procurement…)
Interactions with our regulators, to gain agreement on our approach to commissioning
• Ensuring that the needs of the commissioning programme are well understood across the wider organisation, including engineering, manufacturing, procurement etc.

Qualifications & Experience

• Degree-level qualifications in Engineering, Physical Sciences, Mathematics or a related discipline.
• Professional recognition through an appropriate professional body, or be working towards it.
• Strong people leadership skills. Able to build and develop a capable team of engineers – coaching, guiding and supporting them to be at their best.
• Strong planning and organisational skills, to effectively manage the team’s activities and ensure delivery to commitments.
• A proactive, positive attitude, with a willingness to challenge conventional thinking and to actively seek out and spread best practice within and beyond the team.
• A naturally strategic mindset, with the ability to convert strategy into plans of action.
• Strong communication and influencing skills – able to bring commissioning to the forefront of others’ thinking.
• A positive safety attitude, and ability to instil a strong safety culture within the team.
• Knowledge of the product commissioning process in a safety-critical industry would be desirable, but is not essential.
• Knowledge of the nuclear industry, and for example the UK regulatory regime, would be desirable but is not essential.

Pay and Benefits

Flexible working / hybrid and remote working patterns are available with agreement.
Working hours are 37.5 hrs per week with some additional hours as and when required.

Who we are

Rolls-Royce SMR’s small modular reactor (SMR) programme is the first of its kind in the UK.

A Rolls-Royce SMR power station will have the capacity to generate 470mw of low-carbon energy, equivalent to more than 150 onshore wind turbines. It will provide consistent baseload generation for at least 60 years, helping achieve the Government’s target of 24GW of nuclear energy by 2050.

In addition to stable base load power, Rolls-Royce SMRs will be able to provide energy for the manufacture of green hydrogen and synthetic fuels, to support the path to Net Zero and the decarbonisation of transport.

Out technology is based upon well-established Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) technology, in use all over the world, but Rolls-Royce SMR’s unique approach will see the reactor components built in factory conditions and assembled on site.

Our factory-built model is entirely scalable, as demand increases, we invest in further factories using the same design and management systems used for all our SMRs.

When fully operational the Rolls-Royce SMR programme is forecast to create 40,000 regional UK jobs by 2050 and generate £52bn in economic benefit.
