Reactor Island Fire Suppression Systems Engineer
Morson Talent are working in partnership with Rolls-Royce SMR (small modular reactor) to recruit a Fire Suppression Engineer who will develop design solutions for the Reactor Island equipment Fire Suppression systems from preliminary concept through to detailed design and regulatory acceptance.
Rolls-Royce SMR is a start-up joint special purpose vehicle (SPV) business, specifically created to design, construct and deliver a new fleet of Small Modular Reactors power plants that will be a critical and strategic player in the race to Net Zero carbon emissions globally. Spun out of Rolls-Royce with its pedigree in engineering excellence but also attracting world class inward investment this is an exciting new business with an optimistic opportunity to be a global player in the coming years.
The role will involve the progression of design concepts through a series of gated design reviews, applying systems engineering to develop robust solutions that meet project requirements, and collaborating with interfacing design teams to ensure delivery of an optimised power station product.
The Reactor Island Fire Suppression Engineer will have expertise in the application of systems engineering and fluid systems to the development of the Reactor Island Fire Suppression systems and will lead the delivery of system designs into a fully integrated product solution in accordance with requirements flowed down from the project.
• Apply systems and fluid systems engineering techniques to develop Reactor Island Fire Suppression system design solutions from preliminary concept through to detailed design definition; this will include experience of trade-off studies to ensure an optimum design solution is produced.
• Define and manage engineering requirements on Reactor Island Fire Suppression systems.
• Develop and implement verification & validation strategies for the assigned reactor systems at the various stages of design maturity.
• Collaborate with other design teams to achieve a coherent and optimised power station solution.
• Manage and plan own time to ensure on time delivery, cost and quality against all project deliverables.
• Understand and articulate design risks, managing them as appropriate with the Reactor Auxiliary Systems Design Leads.
• Act as technical representative for the assigned reactor systems at technical and project reviews.

• Knowledge of Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) design, plant and behaviour during normal and abnormal operation
• Environmental, Safety, Security and Safeguarding (E3S) regulations and principals (including application of As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) and Best Available Technique (BAT) principals
• E3S case methods (including nuclear safety classification), case structure and document generation
• Generation and management of Verification and Validation (V&V) plans and evidence
• Systems engineering essentials: systems engineering tools and techniques (e.g. functional modelling, Function Means Analysis (FMA), decision analysis, Quality Function Deployment (QFD)), concept generation, assessment and selection.
• Systems Thinking Essentials: Requirements development (including development of structured Requirements, Evidence, Definition and Verification (REDV) data and information) and management
• Configuration management essentials
• Design for, and generation and management of requirements for, Installations, Commissioning, Operations and Maintenance (ICOM)
Qualifications & Experience
• Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Chartered, or working towards chartered status, with a relevant professional institute, for example, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
• Systems engineering design experience.
• Mechanical, Fluid Systems, Fire Protection and Prevention design experience.
• Ideally, knowledge of nuclear system design and operation.
• Preferably recognised safety qualification (e.g. NEBOSH, IOSH)
• Planning and organising skills to manage programme activities and deliverables.
• Ability to communicate effectively with any audience, quickly establishing credibility and buy-in.
