Internal Hazards Lead

Morson Talent are working in partnership with Rolls Royce SMR to appoint an Internal Hazards Lead, to join their growing Safety team. You can be based at either Warrington or Derby with the option of hybrid working.

The Post
Reporting to the Safety Analysis Team Lead, as the Internal Hazards Lead you will play a key role in supporting the development of the UK SMR Power Station and the successful completion of the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and the Environment Agency (EA) Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process.

Key Responsibilities
• Own, develop and maintain the internal hazards safety case programme as part of the overall GDA delivery programme.
• Line manage and develop a team of direct reports capable of developing internal hazards case submissions.
• Ensuring that the appropriate level of quality and governance is applied to external hazards case submissions.
• Acting as a nuclear safety Technical Authority and be able to represent the project at appropriate internal technical and project reviews and at external meetings with the regulator and other stakeholders.
• Keeping up to date with developments in the nuclear industry and the work of the appropriate external industry groups in the UK and worldwide.
• Working with the engineering disciplines to ensure that internal hazards are considered in the design and layout of the power station design.
• Providing support to the engineering disciplines enabling them to use internal hazards considerations as input to their design decisions.
• To work with the GDA PMO to plan and manage internal hazard case work to meet technical, budget and SMR programme requirements.

Required Competencies
• An understanding in the staged development of internal hazard cases in support of a developing design to meet UK regulatory expectations
• Experience of engaging with assessors within the ONR
• In-depth knowledge of the types of internal hazards that could impact the safe operation of a complex facility, such as an operating NPP, and in the derivation of withstand requirements
• Familiarity of internal hazards modelling tools
• Experience in the consideration of internal hazards in support of the design of a NPP
• Extensive knowledge of PWR plant design and operation.
• Experience in the leadership of the production of internal hazard case documentation.
• Experience of the UK civil nuclear regulatory regime and in particular the UK regulator’s GDA process.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills to be able to represent the project both internally and externally.
• A demonstrable ability to work in multidisciplinary teams with staff from all levels to tight deadlines.

Qualifications & Experience
• Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Engineering, Maths, Physics or equivalent or significant relevant industry experience.
• Chartered or working towards Chartered status with a professional engineering, or equivalent, body.
