Test Rig Design Engineer - Mechanical
Rolls-Royce SMR is a start-up joint special purpose vehicle (SPV) business, specifically created to design, construct and deliver a new fleet of Small Modular Reactors power plants that will be a critical and strategic player in the race to Net Zero carbon emissions globally.
The Development Engineering organisation is accountable for proving that the SMR power station design meets its objectives and requirements. This encompasses not just the domain of nuclear engineering, but the broader range of engineering functions necessary to deliver a major infrastructure project. The team’s remit includes defining the Verification Strategy for the power station, and also executing any verification activities that involve testing - and these range from laboratory-type tests through to highly complex system-level rig tests in some world-leading facilities.

Reporting to the Test Rig Design Team Lead, the Test Rig Design Engineer will be responsible for the development of test rigs which provide data for a range of complex fluid system and mechanical problems. The test rig designs will be developed through a series of gated reviews, requiring the use of systems engineering and process design techniques to develop robust solutions that meet the project requirements.
There are opportunities within the RR SMR programme to design a range of exciting and complex thermal hydraulic and mechanical demonstration test rigs which are required to verify the design of the SMR Power Station.
- Apply systems and process engineering techniques to develop test rigs from preliminary concept through to detailed design and supporting implementation, and operation; this will include conducting trade-off studies to ensure an optimum design is produced.
- Progress conceptual and detailed designs for a range of components and sub-systems. The successful candidate will have mechanical design knowledge of one or more of the following: complex mechanical structures, vessels, tanks, valves, pumps, heat exchangers, actuation methods, heating sources, low- and high-pressure system equipment.
- Define and manage test rig requirements, nominally including systems, components, installations, and controls and instrumentation requirements.
- Develop engineering assessments e.g. mechanical designs, component specification and selection and heat balance calculations.
- Develop test rigs that are safe by design, supporting the production of HAZOPs and FMECAs.
- Develop design documentation including P&IDs, system descriptions and operating philosophies.
- Work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary engineering team to deliver an optimised test rig. This will include working with power station design teams, suppliers, and external test houses.
- Manage and plan own time to ensure delivery to cost, quality and schedule.
- Understand and articulate design risks, managing them as appropriate with the Test Rig Design Leads.
- Act as a technical representative for assigned test rigs at technical and project reviews.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Qualified to degree level or equivalent in engineering, physical sciences, or a related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (or equivalent) or working towards professional accreditation.
- Knowledge of mechanical design fundamentals.
- Mechanical design experience that could be gained from any relevant industry.
- Familiarity with systems engineering principles is desirable.
