The Company:

Rolls-Royce SMR is a start-up joint special purpose vehicle (SPV) business, specifically created to design, construct and deliver a new fleet of Small Modular Reactors power plants that will be a critical and strategic player in the race to Net Zero carbon emissions globally.  Spun out of Rolls-Royce with its pedigree in engineering excellence but also attracting world class inward investment this is an exciting new business with an optimistic opportunity to be a global player in the coming years.

The Position:

The role is responsible for the design and delivery of the SMR Nuclear Island integrated mechanical and electrical layout. The role will involve developing an understanding of integration and layout requirements and generating geometric solutions and arrangements. The role will be supported by a dedicated CAD engineering team and will work closely with installations, system design, architects, and civil design.

Experience within the following areas are considered highly desirable:

  • Development and application of installation requirements into an integrated design solution.
  • Working with CAD toolsets, including approaches to embedding data into 3D tools, such as Model-based Definition (MBD) and/or Building Information Modelling (BIM).
  • Understanding Human Factors and Operations in relation to the development of plant arrangements.
  • The application of safety engineering in the field of arrangement design (including the use of hazard assessments).
  • The use of 4D tools and methods to support the understanding of construction, installation, and operations.

Applicants should have familiarity with the application of codes and standards through design, safety case engineering, requirements management, and systems engineering methods.

Experience with the application of risk management, and installation/construction schedules and planning are highly desirable.

Experience within the design of nuclear mechanical, electrical and structural systems is highly desirable, but not mandated. Applicants with wider industry experience in the application of large-scale installation and integration of process and structural solutions will also be considered.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities for the Principal/Senior Mechanical and Electrical Engineer include:

  • Production of integrated layout solutions through concept design development and optioneering.
  • Working with due regard to Health, Safety and Environment to ensure that solutions comply with all necessary corporate, business and legislative requirements and procedures.
  • Understand the nature of the risks applicable to reactor integration and make decisions in accordance with this understanding and the programme risk profile.  Clearly articulate the risks and manage as appropriate with the SMR project.
  • Deliver reactor integration layouts and attributes that meet the customer requirements in respect of quality, time & cost.
  • Ensuring solutions are verifiable against input requirements, and development of associated methods of assurance.
  • Ensure that quality is maintained throughout the SMR project lifecycle by undertaking appropriate technical reviews and providing the required inputs to the main project technical review gates.

Experience

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (or working towards Chartership).
  • Proven experience in the delivery of significant installation design programmes to time, cost and quality.
  • Experience in leading the development of design solutions from initial concept through to detailed design definition using a robust Design Process, this will include experience of DfX and trade-off studies to ensure an optimum design solution is produced.
