The Company

Rolls-Royce SMR is a start-up joint special purpose vehicle (SPV) business, specifically created to design, construct and deliver a new fleet of Small Modular Reactors power plants that will be a critical and strategic player in the race to Net Zero carbon emissions globally.  Spun out of Rolls-Royce with its pedigree in engineering excellence but also attracting world class inward investment this is an exciting new business with an optimistic opportunity to be a global player in the coming years.

The Position

The Cross Component Engineer will play a key part in the development of the business and engineering foundations and infrastructure required to work effectively across the components team and ensuring efficient and effective implementation of key policies and processes in the business. The candidate shall ensure enabling activities and foundations are in place to assure delivery of the component programmes.  They will be responsible for implementing policies, defining and developing codes and standards and ensuring a consistent approach to REDV across component areas. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce, or assist in the production, of codes and standards to support the allocation of technical requirements at the working level.  
  • Ensure consistency across all component areas in the application and management of REDV information.
  • Assist the Lead Engineer in identifying and facilitating key enabling work for the components team to ensure foundations and infrastructure are in place to support the programmes.
  • Produce guidance material for the benefit of the whole team.
  • Deliver enablers to standardised methodologies and ways of working. 
  • Work within IPTs to identify common challenges and issues across the components team and propose solutions to be implemented within the cross-component team. 
  • Work with the components engineers to ensure lessons learnt from work packages are captured and shared across the components team. 


  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Understanding of the broader business and how it supports the component design teams.
  • Understanding of processes, procedures, codes and standards frameworks and how they are implemented. 
  • A willingness work with a level of resilience needed for working in a new business and with ambiguity. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with any audience, quickly establishing credibility and buy-in.
  • Ability to integrate well within a project team in a commercial environment. This will include working in collaboration with external partners and suppliers.
