Morson Talent are working exclusively with Rolls Royce SMR (Small Modular Reactors) to recruit a Reactor Island Auxiliary System Design Lead to join their team in either Derby or Warrington.

The Post

The Reactor Island Auxiliary System Design Leads will be responsible for technical and programme delivery of the system design solutions for auxiliary and supporting functions across the Reactor Island. Technical scope will nominally include:
• Nuclear HVAC and Chilled Water System Design;
• Mechanical Design for Radiation Projection Design;
• Mechanical Design for Hazard Protection;
• Fire Suppression and Portable Water;
• Reactor Plant Insulation;
• Miscellaneous Support Systems (e.g. trace heating);
• Plant simulator.

The successful candidate will lead a team of engineers to ensure the delivery of the Reactor Island auxiliary and support system designs for the SMR programme. The role will involve developing mechanical system design concepts through gated design reviews, providing technical guidance and supervision to the broader design team, acting as intelligent customer for subcontract packages of work, and engaging with external stakeholders and regulators on the selected system designs.

The system design lead will have expertise in the application of systems engineering to the development of nuclear systems and will lead the delivery of system designs into a fully integrated product solution in accordance with requirements flowed down from the project.

Key Responsibilities

• Apply technical expertise to develop system design solutions from preliminary concept through to detailed design definition; this will include experience of trade-off studies to ensure an optimum design solution is produced.
• Define and manage engineering requirements on reactor plant components, installations, controls and instrumentation.
• Develop and implement verification & validation strategies for the assigned reactor systems at the various stages of design maturity.
• Collaborate with other design teams to achieve a coherent and optimised power station solution.
• Develop robust plans for the assigned systems design team. Prioritise team activities to ensure on time delivery, cost and quality for all project deliverables.
• Define and act as intelligent customer for subcontracted work packages that support the overall development and justification of the waste process systems.
• Understand and articulate design and programme risks, managing them as appropriate with the Waste Management Design Manager.
• Ensure quality is maintained throughout the design process by undertaking local technical reviews and providing inputs to the main project technical review gates.
• Act as technical authority for the assigned systems and represent the Design Manager at technical and project reviews when required.

Qualifications & Experience

• Qualified to degree level or equivalent in engineering or a related technical discipline.
• Chartered Engineer with a relevant professional institute (or an equivalent accreditation).
• Nuclear process system design experience, including responsibility for technical and project leadership in a relevant field.
• Knowledge of reactor plant system design, operation and safety cases.
• Knowledge of relevant design codes, including systems engineering and the application of ALARP and BAT principles.
