Morson Talent are working exclusively with Rolls Royce SMR (Small Modular Reactors) to recruit a Reactor Island Waste & Auxiliary System Design Manager to join their team in either Derby or Warrington.

The Post
Reporting to the SMR Chief Design Engineer (CDE) for Reactor Island (RI), the RI Waste and Auxiliary Systems Design Manager will be responsible for technical, programme delivery and leadership of assigned resource, both internal and in the supply chain. The Design Manager for RI Waste and Auxiliary Systems will have expertise in leading the application of systems engineering to develop design solutions from preliminary concept through to detailed design and regulatory acceptance. This includes leading the delivery of systems design solutions as part of a fully integrated product solution in accordance with requirements flowed down from the project. The role will involve collaboration with, and influencing of, the other RI and power station design areas as necessary.


Key Responsibilities

• Responsible and accountable for the development of design solutions for RI waste and auxiliary systems that meet all SMR project requirements.
• Develop robust, resourced plans for RI waste and auxiliary systems design.
• Apply technical expertise to act as Intelligent Customer for any outsourced design solutions.
• Understand the nature of the risks applicable to RI waste and auxiliary systems and make decisions in accordance with this understanding and the programme risk profile. Clearly articulate the risks and manage as appropriate with the SMR project.
• Deliver RI waste and auxiliary systems designs in line with best practice and to standard policies and processes, to deliver robust, low cost products that are optimised and integrate operational experience and lessons learnt.
• Ensure that quality is maintained throughout the SMR project lifecycle by undertaking appropriate technical reviews and providing the required inputs to the main project technical review gates.
• Manage technical interfaces with other technical functions on the SMR project to ensure that a coherent technical solution is achieved.
• Prioritise and lead all activities for RI waste and auxiliary systems to ensure on time delivery, cost and quality is achieved for all project deliverables.
• Act as RI waste and auxiliary systems Technical Authority and be able to represent the CDE for Reactor Island for the RI waste and auxiliary systems at SMR technical and project reviews.
• Assessment of the RI waste and auxiliary systems Designers’ performance and development of a continual improvement culture.
• Development and implementation of verification & validation requirements at the various stages of design maturity.

Qualifications & Experience

• Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Chartered Mechanical Engineer (or equivalent) with design experience including responsibility for technically leading systems design programmes.
• Excellent knowledge of waste and auxiliary systems design, operations, etc.
• Sound knowledge of relevant design codes, including systems engineering.
• Experience in the interpretation of customer specifications and defining and managing engineering requirements.
• Proven technical leadership skills in delivery of significant systems design programmes to time, cost and quality.
• Planning and organising skills to manage programme activities and deliverables.
• Ability to communicate effectively with any audience, quickly establishing credibility and buy-in.
